In 1891, a group of Russian businessmen succeeded in petitioning Czar Alexander III. They were allowed to transport a 300-kilogram copper bell from Tolborsk, Siberia, to Uglich, 2200 kilometers west of Tolborsk.
The copper bell traveled along the Volga River in the late spring of 1892 and arrived at the wharf in front of Uglich Cathedral by steamship. There, a return ceremony was held for the copper bell, just three centuries after its initial exile in Siberia.
